Guild Wars 2008 Tournament Series


The Guild Wars® 2008 tournament series takes place online and culminates each month in Guild-versus-Guild and 1v1 Hero Battle championship tournaments that feature exciting prizes for the top finishers.


Events Eligibility

  • All Guild Wars players and guilds who meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein are eligible to compete in this online tournament series. All Guild Wars guilds are eligible to compete in the 2008 Tournament Series championships except those that include employees or contractors of NCsoft, ArenaNet, or each of their respective subsidiaries or affiliates or their advertising or promotion agencies, or those who are domiciled with any such person, or those who have been disqualified for other reasons (see below). This is a skill-based tournament based on each guild or individual's ability to defeat other guilds or individuals.
     
  • Individuals and guilds will be disqualified if they are banned from the game for any reason, including without limitation a violation of the Guild Wars User Agreement. If individual players are disqualified, the guild may also be disqualified.
     
  • ArenaNet reserves the right to reschedule and/or restart games and matches as needed. Such decisions will be announced and executed only by official ArenaNet personnel.
     
  • ArenaNet reserves the right to suspend or revoke a player's account without prior notice for any reason deemed necessary.
     

Notes

To be eligible to participate in a month-end championship, the following requirements must be met:

  • As of the first of each month, the player must be age 16 or older. A player under the age of 18 will be required to provide notarized written consent of a parent or legal guardian to receive prizes as described below. In addition, the player must have Internet access as well as access to a personal computer.
     
  • Players receiving real world prizes must execute the following: A Publicity Release, a Liability Release, and a Declaration of Eligibility. For a player under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must execute the Declaration and Releases in addition to the player.
     
  • Player must be a Guild Wars, Guild Wars FactionsTM, or Guild Wars NightfallTM account holder in good standing and in compliance with the Guild Wars User Agreement.
     
  • Player must comply at all times with the Guild Wars 2008 Tournament Series Rules and the Universal Guild Wars Tournament Rules.
     

Test Tournaments

  • ArenaNet reserves the right to run live "test" tournaments as needed to test functionality of the Automated Tournament System.
     
  • These test tournaments may be scheduled at any time.
     
  • Participants in these test tournaments must understand that these tournaments might not run using the standard rules, could end at any time, and do not guarantee receipt of QP or TRP.
     
  • These test tournaments will be scheduled at various times in addition to the existing AT daily schedule and will not have an entrance fee.
     

DAILY AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS

Guild Participation

  • For a team to be eligible, at least four (4) of the eight (8) members of a guild's team in a daily GvG automated tournament must have been a member of that guild for fourteen (14) days prior to the start of the tournament. The other four (4) players on the team can be guild members, guests, Heroes, or henchmen.
     
  • Teams may have different guild members or players compete in subsequent rounds but the same rule listed above applies. Only the eight (8) guild members who competed in the first round will collect any earned Tournament Reward Points.
     
  • A guild must have at least four (4) human players available to play during a match (in which case they may also use four (4) computer-controlled henchmen or Heroes). If a guild is unable to field at least four (4) human players, then that guild forfeits the battle.
     
  • Any guild officer can register a guild for an automated tournament using the Guild Battle button and selecting the Register for Tournament option from the list of possible guild battle types. Five (5) tournament tokens will be deducted from the inventory of the officer who is registering for the tournament.
     
  • Each tournament token costs 1,000 Balthazar faction points. You may purchase these tournament tokens from the Tournament NPC who appears in every guild hall as well as in the Great Temple of Balthazar and the Hero Battles arena.
     
  • The map rotation for GvG games will be in this order: Warrior's Isle, Burning Isle, Uncharted Isle, Isle of Weeping Stone, Frozen Isle, and Imperial Isle.
     

1v1 Participation

  • Individuals interested in participating in a daily 1v1 automated tournament must have registered their accounts with a Tournament NPC (found in guild halls, the Hero Battles arena, and the Great Temple of Balthazar).
     
  • To register your account, simply select one of your character names. This name identifies your account in the ladder and in tournaments. You may change this name once every 30 days.
     
  • To register for an automated tournament, use the Hero Battle button (only available in the Hero Battles arena) and select the Register for Tournament option from the list of possible Hero Battle types. One (1) tournament token will be deducted from your inventory.
     
  • Each tournament token costs 1,000 Balthazar faction points. You may purchase these tournament tokens from the Tournament NPC who appears in every guild hall as well as in the Great Temple of Balthazar and the Hero Battles arena.
     
  • The map rotation for 1v1 games will be in this order: Bombardment, Desert Sands, the Crossing, and the Beachhead.
     

MONTHLY AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS

Guild Participation

  • At least six (6) of the eight (8) members of a guild's team in a monthly GvG automated tournament must have been a member of that guild for at least fourteen (14) full days prior to the announced start time of that tournament in order for the guild to compete. The other two (2) members of the team must be members of that guild but do not have to meet the fourteen (14) day requirement.
     
  • Guilds may have different players compete in subsequent rounds but the same rule listed above applies. Only the eight (8) guild members who competed in the first round will collect any earned Tournament Reward Points.
     
  • A guild must have at least six (6) human players available to play during a match (in which case the guild may also use two (2) computer-controlled henchmen or Heroes). If a guild is unable to field at least six (6) human players, then that guild forfeits the battle.
     
  • Any guild officer can register a guild for an automated tournament using the Guild Battle button and selecting the Register for Tournament option from the list of possible guild battle types. Five (5) tournament tokens will be deducted from the inventory of the officer who is registering the guild in the tournament.

1v1 Participation

  • The same rules and restrictions apply as in the daily 1v1 Tournaments.
     

Season Structure

  • Each month of the 2008 Tournament Series is a "season". The seasons consist of a number of daily Swiss competition-based tournaments in which guilds (for GvG) or individuals (for 1v1) can participate. The number of registered participants determines the number of rounds for each tournament.
     
  • The K rating for Daily Automated Tournaments is 25. See Appendix B — Elo Ratings.
     
  • Automated GvG tournaments have a maximum of 32 participating guilds per event, with a maximum of five (5) rounds of Swiss competition.
     
  • Automated 1v1 tournaments have a maximum of 128 participants per event, with a maximum of seven (7) rounds of Swiss competition.
     
  • When more than 32 guilds or 128 individuals register for a specific automated tournament, additional copies of that tournament are created. Each copy has a minimum number of participants: eight (8) for 1v1 and five (5) for GvG. The copies have no more than the previously stated maximums. Thus it is possible, with a large number of participants, for several copies of a tournament to run simultaneously.
     
  • Each tournament and its copies offer the same prize opportunities.
     
  • The rounds of Swiss competition for each tournament take place consecutively one after another until a tournament ends. A list showing the tournament standings and the pairings for the upcoming round is available in-game for participants and fans to see.
     
  • All rounds are single battle matches.
     
  • Each round ends with one participant as the winner. In the event that a GvG match lasts to the time limit without a clear winner, the team whose Guild Lord has the higher current Health will be declared the winner of the match.
     
  • For all automated tournaments (GvG and 1v1), all participants are randomly seeded for the first round.
     
  • Each subsequent Swiss round pairs participants randomly against opponents with matching win/loss records.
     
  • Participants who forfeit a match for any reason are dropped from the remainder of the automated tournament. They still collect all prizes or rewards they have already earned.
     
  • At the end of the rounds of Swiss competition for each tournament, all participants may earn Tournament Reward Points (TRPs) and/or qualifier points (QPs) based upon their final rank in the tournament. In the event of any ties, these tie-breakers are used in the following order to determine final standings: match points earned, opponent's match-win percentage, and tournament ladder rank (captured at the start of the tournament). See Appendix A — Match Scoring and Tie Breakers.
     
  • At the end of each season, all guilds and individuals who have earned sufficient QPs are invited to participate in the appropriate end-of-season championship.
     

Automated Tournament Schedule

  • The starting times of tournaments rotate throughout the week to provide fair competitive opportunities for participants in all time zones.

Connectivity

  • Due to the nature of computers and the Internet, ArenaNet is not responsible for the results of any disconnection or network problems experienced by players.

Daily Tournament Prizes

  • Tournament Reward Points (see section below).
     
  • In addition to earning TRP, high finishing guilds and individuals earn qualifier points (QPs). The numbers of QPs awarded in these daily tournaments are as follows:

  • At the end of each qualifier season, guilds that have earned sufficient QPs earn an invitation to compete in the monthly playoffs for that month.
     
  • Earned QPs are shown on the GvG and 1v1 ladders.
     
  • QPs are reset to zero for the next season one (1) hour after the start of a monthly playoff.
     

Tournament Reward Points

Tournament Reward Points are awarded at the end of a tournament to the top 25 percent finishers. Only guilds or players who have played at least one game receive points.

Formula:

"Winners" are defined as the top 25 percent of finishers.

((Number of Winners – (rank of each winner-1)) * Tournament Reward Points) / Number of Winners;

Tournament Reward points differ for GvG and 1v1, and for daily and monthly. The first place finisher would receive:

GvG Monthly: 120
GvG Daily: 60
1v1 Monthly: 40
1v1 Daily: 20

Additionally, players receive points for each single victory in a tournament as follows:

For example, if 40 people played in a 1v1 daily tournament, the top 10 winners (25 percent of the finishers, 10 out of 40) would receive the following amount of points:

All players, no matter their rank, are then given 1 point for each win in the tournament.


MONTHLY AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Playoff Structure

  • Playoffs are open only to guilds and players who earned sufficient QPs in the current season.
     
  • In addition to increased Tournament Reward Points, guilds and players who finish high enough earn real-world prizes that will be mailed to them.
     
  • The K rating for the Monthly Playoffs is 50. See Appendix B — Elo Rating.
     
  • The last qualifier tournament for a format starts no less than eight (8) hours prior to the posted start time for that format's playoffs (GvG or 1v1).
     
  • Daily tournaments for the next monthly season begin no sooner than twelve (12) hours after the start of the monthly playoffs for that format (GvG or 1v1).
     

GvG Playoffs Participation

  • A guild must have earned at least 20 QPs during the monthly season to be eligible for the monthly GvG playoffs.
     
  • All of the participation rules listed under Guild Participation in the MONTHLY AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS section above apply.
     
  • At the end of the rounds of Swiss competition, the top sixteen (16) guilds continue in single elimination play to determine the final standings for the playoffs.
     

1v1 Playoffs Participation

  • A player must have earned at least 20 QPs during the monthly season to be eligible for the monthly 1v1 playoffs.
     
  • All of the participation rules listed under 1v1 Participation in the DAILY AUTOMATED TOURNAMENTS section above apply.
     
  • At the end of the rounds of Swiss competition, the top two to sixteen (2–16) players continue in single elimination play to determine the final standings for the playoffs. The number of players who advance to the single elimination round is determined by the number of non-forfeited players at the end of the tournament.

Each month's GvG championship takes place on a Saturday as listed in the chart above, and each 1v1 championship takes place on the Sunday as listed above.

Tournament Fan Support

  • The Xunlai Tournament House allows PvP fans to earn their own Tournament Reward Points by predicting the top eight finishers for the monthly GvG and 1v1 championships.
     
  • Each match played in the single elimination rounds is automatically marked as a Championship match and shows up in a separate championship column in Observer Mode. For extra fan enjoyment, these matches are available in Observer Mode for a longer period of time.
     

Tournament Prizes

  • At the end of the playoffs, the eligible participants receive their earned Tournament Reward Points.
     
  • All guilds that have earned a cape trim receive it within three (3) days of the completion of the playoffs.
     
  • Guild leaders of the guilds that have earned any real-world prizes in the GvG playoffs will be contacted by email within one (1) week to collect the names, email addresses, and mailing addresses of the eight (8) participating members of the guild who will receive a real-world prize. A guild's leader has the final say on which eight (8) members of the guild collect any earned real-world prizes. Only guild members who played in the tournament are eligible for prizes.
     
  • Individual players who have earned any real-world prizes in the 1v1 Playoffs will be contacted by email within one (1) week in order to collect their names and mailing addresses.
     
  • All players who have earned a real-world prize will be contacted by email to complete and submit a Declaration of Eligibility and Liability Release before their prizes can be processed.
     
  • If you have won a real-world prize and have not heard from ArenaNet after one (1) week has passed since the playoffs, please email tournament@arena.net so that we can begin to process any earned real-world prizes.
     
  • Please allow 6–8 weeks for the processing and shipping of earned real-world prizes.
     
  • Questions about prizes or updated shipping addresses can be emailed to tournament@arena.net.
     

ArenaNet will provide real world prizes for the 2008 Tournament Series Championships through April 2008, the three year anniversary of Guild Wars, and will then offer exclusive and never-before-seen in-game prizes for the remainder of 2008.

Determination of the eligibility of a person under age 18 to participate in the Guild Wars 2008 Tournament Series Championship is based on the permission granted to said person by his/her parent or legal guardian. This is a contest of skill and, therefore, there are no odds of winning as is the case with a game of chance. Taxes on the prizes (including, without limitation, income taxes), if any, are the sole responsibility of the individual winners.

Release: By entering (or consenting to the entry of a person under 18) a Guild Wars 2008 Tournament Series Championship, each participant (or the participant's parent or legal guardian, if the participant is under 18) and the winner (or the winner's parent or legal guardian, if winner is under 18) thereby releases ArenaNet, NCsoft, NCsoft Europe Ltd., NC Interactive, Inc. and their respective parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, directors, officers, employees and agencies from any liability whatsoever, and waive any and all causes of action, related to any claims, costs, injuries, losses, or damages of any kind arising out of or in connection with the Guild Wars 2008 Tournament Series Championship or delivery, misdelivery, acceptance, possession, use of or inability to use any prize (including, without limitation, claims, costs, injuries, losses and damages related to personal injuries, death, damage to or destruction of property, rights of publicity or privacy, defamation or portrayal in a false light, whether intentional or unintentional), whether under a theory of contract, tort (including negligence), warranty or other theory. Except where prohibited, you agree that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or connected with this contest or any prize awarded shall be resolved under the laws of the State of Washington, without respect to any conflict of law issues, and participants agree that such shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the U.S. Federal and State Courts of King County, Washington, U.S.A. All of Sponsor's decisions regarding the application and interpretation of the Rules are final.

APPENDIX A — Match Scoring and Tie-Breakers

Match points are used for pairing and tie-breakers. Each guild or 1v1 player (hereby know as competitor) earns 3 match points for every match won, 1 point for any draws, and 0 points for any matches lost. Each competitor is assigned an additional 0 to 0.999 match points based on that competitor's opponent's Match-Win Percentage.

Each AT participant's match-win percentage is that competitor's accumulated match points divided by 3, times the number of rounds played, or 0.33, whichever is greater. (Establishing a minimum match-win percentage of 0.33 limits the effect low performances have when calculating and comparing Opponent's Match-Win Percentages.)

For example, a competitor's record is 2-1-1 (2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw) after 4 rounds of Swiss play. That competitor has earned 7 match points and has a Match-Win Percentage as follows: 7/(4*3) = .583

A competitor's Opponent's Match-Win Percentage is the average Match-Win Percentage of each opponent that competitor faced (ignoring any rounds for which the competitor received a bye or forfeit).

For example, using the above example, a competitor finished 2-1-1 and its opponents' match records were 2-2-0, 1-2-1, 3-1-0, and 0-4-0, so the competitor's Opponent's Match-Win Percentage is as follows:

Replacing the 0/12 with 0.33 (see above minimum) and translating to the decimal system we get:

This number, which ranges from 0.33 to 1.0 is then scaled to range from 0.0 to 0.999 (for readability) and then added to the competitor's score.

The scaled number is calculated as follows:

(Opponent Win Percentage-0.33) * (0.999/0.67)

In our example above, the competitor has 7.19 points. (7 from its 2 wins and 1 draw, and 0.19 based on an Opponent Win Percentage of 0.46.)

While this may seem a bit complicated, it basically comes down to using the strength of a competitor's schedule as the tie-breaker. The competitor who defeats opponents with better records ends up with a slightly higher score than those competitors who defeated weaker opponents.

Further, each competitor's ladder rank is captured at the start of a tournament. In the event that any ties remain after accounting for Match Points Earned, the ladder rank at the start of the tournament is used to break ties, with better-ranked participants beating worse-ranked guilds (example: a competitor ranked 5th on the ladder beats a competitor ranked 12th on the ladder).


APPENDIX B — Elo Rating System

The Guild Wars Tournament Ladders use the Elo ratings system.

This Elo rating system compares a guild or 1v1 player's (hereby know as competitor) match records against opponents' match records and determines the probability of that competitor winning the matchup. This probability factor determines how many points an Elo rating goes up or down based on the results of each match. When competitors defeat opponents with a higher rating, their Elo rating goes up more than when they defeat opponents with a lower rating (because competitors have a high probability of defeating those with lower ratings). All new competitors start out with a base rating of 1000. The Guild Wars tournament ladder uses the following equation to determine a competitor's win probability in each match:

This probability is then used to recalculate each competitor's rating after the match. In the equation below, competitors receive 1 point if they win the match and 0 if they lose. The competitor's new ratings are determined as follows:

Competitor's New Rating = Competitor's Old Rating + (K-Value * (Scoring Points–Competitor's Win Probability))

All competitors are rated beginning with the first rated match in which they play. Further ratings are calculated chronologically from that first match.

The K-Value is the maximum number of points a competitor's rating may go up or down based on the results of a single match within an event that uses the Elo ratings system. The current K ratings ArenaNet uses are as follows:

  • The K rating for free play matches is 5.
  • The K rating for Daily Automated Tournaments is 25.
  • The K rating for Monthly Championships is 50.
