Celestial Tournament Swiss Rounds

Guild Wars Celestial Tournament Update

After talking with a number of guilds and reading discussions on various fan forums, we have changed the rules for the Guild Wars Celestial Tournament team rosters to allow up to ten guild members (eight participants and two alternates).

The Celestial Tournament is an effort to prepare guilds for the transition to automated tournaments, which will only allow eight members of a guild to participate for each specific event. Up to three tournaments will occur each day and, to be clear, eight different members of your guild can sign up and play in each event. Therefore, your guild is not limited to the same eight players per season, only per event. Since the Celestial Tournament take places over a two-month period instead of in a single multiple-hour period (the schedule for automated tournaments), we recognize that it could prove difficult for the same eight players to be available every round.

The number of prizes awarded per team is still limited to eight. After the tournament ends, tournament leaders have the responsibility to inform ArenaNet which eight members of their tournament rosters receive the prizes.

You will find full details of the Guild Wars Celestial Tournament below.

Guild Wars Celestial Tournament
Rules and Information

The Guild Wars® Celestial Tournament takes place online and culminates in a single elimination Guild-versus-Guild tournament that features over $7,000 (retail value) in prizes for the top 8 guilds.

Events Eligibility

  • All Guild Wars players and guilds that meet the eligibility requirements set forth herein are eligible to compete in this on-line tournament. All Guild Wars guilds are eligible to compete in the Celestial Tournament except those that include employees or contractors of NCsoft, ArenaNet, or each of their respective subsidiaries or affiliates or their advertising or promotion agencies, or those who are domiciled with any such person, or those who have been disqualified for other reasons (see below). This is a skill-based tournament based on each guild's ability to defeat other guilds.

  • Guilds will be disqualified if they are banned from the game for any reason, including without limitation a violation of the Guild Wars User Agreement. If individual players are disqualified, the guild may also be disqualified.

  • At the end of the Swiss rounds of the tournament, the top 16 guilds will compete in a single elimination tournament to determine the final results for the event.

Notes

To be eligible for the Celestial Tournament roster, the following requirements must be met:

  • As of February 1, 2007, each player must be age 16 or older. Players under age 18 will be required to provide notarized written consent of a parent or legal guardian to receive prizes as described below. In addition, each player must have Internet access as well as access to a personal computer.

  • Players receiving prizes must execute the following: A Publicity Release, a Liability Release, and Declaration of Eligibility. For a player under age 18, a parent or guardian must execute the Declaration and Releases in addition to the player.

  • Player must be a Guild Wars, Guild Wars FactionsTM, or Guild Wars NightfallTM account holder in good standing and in compliance with the Guild Wars User Agreement.

  • Each player may only be listed on one tournament roster for this event, regardless of whether or not that player owns multiple accounts.

  • Player must comply at all times with the Guild Wars Celestial Tournament Rules and the Universal Guild Wars Tournament Rules.

Guild Registration (GvG participants)

  • Any guild interested in participating in the Celestial Tournament event must mail in its Tournament Roster to tournament@arena.net and such roster must be received by ArenaNet by 19:00 GMT February 14, 2007.

  • A minimum of six and a maximum of ten eligible players from each participating guild is to be listed on that guild's tournament roster (eight participants and up to two alternates). Players listed on this roster must remain members of this guild for the duration of the tournament. This will be verified prior to the start of the single elimination rounds. Players that have left their guild during the tournament's duration will not be eligible to participate in the single elimination playoffs and may jeopardize their guild's eligibility to participate.

  • Each guild must designate one member of their tournament roster to act as their tournament leader. This will be the player to whom all round's pairings will be sent and who will be contacted by opponents in order to schedule matches. This player will also be responsible for submitting all required screenshots to tournament@arena.net.

  • A guild's tournament leader must gather and send in the following information for each member on the guild's roster to tournament@arena.net:
    • Mailing address
    • Country of legal residence
    • Email address
    • Phone number
    • Date of birth
    • Character names on the account

  • ArenaNet collects personal information from you when you enter this Contest. The information is subject to the Privacy Policy of the site through which you enter the Contest.

  • Only players (and accounts) on the Tournament Roster may participate in the Guild Wars Celestial Tournament Swiss and single elimination rounds.

  • In the event that one of the players listed on a tournament roster is unable to play during a scheduled match, the affected guild can replace that player with a computer-controlled henchman. Heroes are not allowed to be used in this tournament.

  • • As stated in the Team Prizes section below, a maximum of eight items (video cards, mice, or gaming pads) will be awarded per guild. In the event that a guild includes alternates on its tournament roster, it will be the responsibility of the designated tournament leader to inform ArenaNet of the names of the eight recipients of the prizes.

Tournament Structure

  • The Guild Wars Celestial Tournament will consist of a number of rounds of Swiss competition based upon the number of participants that lead to the single elimination rounds. At the end of the rounds of Swiss, the top 16 guilds will be invited to compete in a single elimination tournament to determine the final results of the event.

  • The rounds of Swiss competition will take place over the six weeks leading up to the single elimination playoffs. A list showing all of the pairings for the upcoming round will be sent out to all of the tournament leaders prior to the start of the next round. It will be the responsibility of the tournament leaders to contact each other and schedule matches.

  • All rounds will be best two-out-of-three battle matches. The guild listed first will be the challenger for the first battle. For the second battle, the guild listed second will challenge the guild listed first. If a third battle is necessary, the winner of the second battle sends the challenge. Thus the third battle takes place in the guild hall of the loser of the second battle.

  • For the Guild Wars Celestial Tournament, all guilds will be randomly seeded for the first round.

  • Each subsequent Swiss round will pair guilds randomly against opponents with matching win/loss records.

Tournament Schedule

  • The Guild Wars Celestial Tournament Swiss rounds will start on February 16 at 19:00 GMT. The number of Swiss rounds will be based upon the number of guilds participating in the event.

  • Competing guilds will be given a minimum of 96 hours (four days) to contact, schedule, and play their match with their scheduled opponent for each round. The duration of each round will be clearly explained in the round pairing email sent out to all tournament leaders.

  • It will be the responsibility of the tournament leaders to contact their scheduled opponent and find an agreed upon time for the unrated match to take place. Please keep in mind that this is an international competition taking place across multiple time zones, so flexibility will be needed.

  • In the event that the two guilds can't find a mutual time to compete, then the fallback time that is listed in the pairing letter sent to the tournament leaders must be followed. This fallback time is designated based upon the regions of the two participating guilds and attempts to set a time for both guilds outside of normal work/school hours. Since this fallback time is late at night or early in the morning due to varied time zones it is in the interest of both guild leaders to find a mutually agreed upon time for their match.

Match Reporting

  • After the match, the leader of the winning guild is required to email screenshots showing the result to tournament@arena.net prior to the announced due date and time. The "results due date and time" is clearly called out in the pairing letter sent to each tournament leader. The leader of the winning guild must upload one screenshot per round that shows the player names and the Win/Loss message. This means a minimum of two screenshots must be sent if the winning guild won the match 2-0. Please include the time the screenshots were taken in the email as well.

  • If the screenshots described above are not submitted for a match by the announced due date and time, that match will count as a loss for both guilds.

  • If your guild is online and ready to play at the agreed upon time (or the fallback time) and your opponent does not appear within 20 minutes of this time, your tournament leader must send an in-game message to inform the designated Admin that your guild was available and your opponent did not show. If this occurs, then your guild wins the match by default.

  • All guilds that forfeit a match by not showing up will be dropped from the tournament and forfeit any and all prizes unless they have previously contacted their opponent and tournament@arena.net and explained that they are unable to play in the current scheduled match but still wish to stay in the tournament. Guilds will only be allowed to forfeit one round in this manner and still remain in the tournament and eligible to collect prizes.

Single Elimination Schedule

  • At the end of the Swiss rounds of competition, the top 16 guilds will be invited to compete in a single elimination tournament to determine the final results of the event.

  • In the event of any ties, these tie-breakers are used in the following order to determine which guilds get invited: opponent's match-win percentage, guild's battle-win percentage, opponent's battle-win percentage, and tournament ladder rank (as of 3/27/07 19:00 GMT).

  • All rounds are best two out of three battle matches. The guild listed first is the challenger for the first battle. For the second battle, the guild listed second challenges the guild listed first. If a third battle is necessary, the winner of the second battle sends the challenge. Thus the third battle takes place in the Guild Hall of the loser of the second battle.

  • The rounds of single elimination start at the following times:
    • Round 1 (16)– March 31, 2007 16:00 GMT
    • Round 2 (8) – March 31, 2007 19:00 GMT
    • Round 3 (4) – April 1, 2007 16:00 GMT
    • Round 4 (2) – April 1, 2007 19:00 GMT
